Society Man a 'Miracle Horse' in This Year's Kentucky Derby? Odds Slashed
Referred to as "the world's most famous jockey" by The Sun, Frankie Dettori has seen odds on the horse he'll be riding slashed in this upcoming Kentucky Derby from 50-1 to 25-1 at some books. BetUS might not be on board believing in a miracle as Society Man was sitting at 36-1 odds as of Tuesday morning.
Dettori was set to retire from horse racing and opted to participate in one final Kentucky Derby. His last appearance in a Kentucky Derby was 24 years ago.
Dettori drew the furthest post position at No. 20. But he recently performed a miracle with Golden Horn in the Arc from the outside stall and bookies believe he'll do it again apparently.
Coral's David Stevens told The Sun: "Having been drawn widest of all in stall 20, Frankie Dettori's task in winning a first Kentucky Derby has not been made any easier.
"But he's defied the odds throughout his career, and if any rider can perform a Churchill Downs miracle, it's Frankie."
More recently, jockey Sonny Leon rode Rich Strike to his victory in the 148th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 7, 2022.
Big Brown won it in 2008 and was the first horse to win from the 20th post. Practical Joke added a fifth-place finish in 2017.

Society Man finished a respectable 2nd place at the Wood Memorial.
Society Man, a 99-1 shot in that race, finished 2 ¼ lengths back in second and earned 50 qualifying points toward the Derby.
His previous race at Aqueduct was won on a muddy track, which bodes well if rain happens to be in the forecast Saturday.
Sierra Leone is the 11-4 favourite for the big race.

Frankie Dettori – Society Man
Difficult as it is to distill Dettori’s career into a few words, it could be said he was born in Milan and made at Ascot. He bade farewell in June to the royal meeting, where he rode 81 winners between 1987 and 2023. A statue of Dettori was unveiled in October at England’s most revered course. That is where he had his most remembered accomplishment, winning all seven races Sept. 28, 1996, at the British Festival of Racing. Putting off his announced retirement to ride again in America this year, Dettori, 53, is looking to win one of the few big races he has not conquered. The gelding Society Man will be Dettori’s first Kentucky Derby ride since 2000. |
